Investigating ‘decent work’ in agriculture

Investigating ‘decent work’ in agriculture

In Journal of Rural Studies (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd), this special issue, edited by members of IAWA, is based on papers presented at the 2nd International Symposium on Work in Agriculture (29 March – 1 April 2021) and explores application of Decent Work (DW), as conceptualised by the International Labour Organisation, to agriculture.

The guest Editors present theoretical considerations and empirical studies from Australia, France and Guadelupe and argue that the ILO’s DW concept on its own is insufficient for characterising the quality of agricultural work and jobs in ways that will support research, policy and practice that aims to improve it. We call for stronger academic engagement with the DW concept outside ILO to push the DW concept forward and make it relevant for improving the working conditions of all, in agriculture and beyond.
